Fayoum Pottery
Fayoum ceramics are a testament to a rich Egyptian tradition, rooted in the village of Tunis, where a small act in the 80s and 90s transformed the area into Egypt’s pottery hub. In the 1980s, Evelyn Porter, a retired architect, opened a pottery school that revived an ancient craft, inspiring a new generation of artisans. Today, potters continue to use age-old techniques, such as the distinctive hammer-and-anvil method, to create both functional and decorative pieces. These handmade ceramics are known for their vibrant glazes and intricate patterns that reflect local life and nature. The craft is experiencing a resurgence, as younger artisans carry on the tradition, blending ancient methods with modern tastes.
